Art Musuem, Feb 29!

I had the most "Wow!" feeling when I came to the art museum because I didn't expect it to be so colorful.
Even the stairs/ escalators have the coolest walls.

Here is my friend, Najwa. I like the refection of her on both sides of the escalators.

Here are the graffiti-ed walls on the left side of the museum.
It was one of those places where you just feel like sitting there because it's just that cool.

I couldn't show you how the insides are because pictures are not allowed but I'll tell you one of my favorite paintings there.
As most of you have noticed,
I have developed a liking for pictures with bold and loud colors.

Ali's wonderland I by Rafiee Abdul Ghan I (2009)
I couldn't find the picture on google so you have go to the museum to see it for yourself.

It's a boy trying to catch butterflies.
There were a lot of colors in the drawing.
I don't know how to describe it but just imagine how it feels.
The colors, to me, represents innocence because
as we grow older, our world starts to lose that innocence.
We start to lose that insight on life and everything complicates when we get older.
The colors just fade to grey.

And sometimes, in order for us to be happy again,
like Ali in the drawing,
we need to learn to catch butterflies.
Relax, take a breather.
Do something fun for a change, be a kid again.
In my opinion, it doesn't hurt be act like a kid
because sometimes, that's exactly what we need to bring back the colors in our life.

Central Market

On the 22th of March, we went to Central Market or how the locals here would refer it as Pasar Seni . It was considered as a tourist attraction to me. It was really cool, different than what I expected. I am not that much of a fan of handicraft but the drawings, sand art, and insect framing thing is really cool.

Before going into the market, there were really cool graffiti on the sides of the drain.

This is the handicraft part of the market.

This is the sand art. It looks fun but it doesn't look easy.

These artist draw portraits and all the drawings look really real.

In the middle of everything Malaysian, these knight in shining armor shows up!

I have taken a liking for the colorful graffiti so here are some panoramic photos of it.

Final Art Project: Cyber Bullying

This is my sketch of my project. Scanned into my laptop

I started off by coloring my puppets.
I used the magnetic lasso tool to "circle" the areas that I want to color.
This is used through out the whole process of coloring.
I used darker shades of purple to indicates shadows on the purple hoodie.
Smudge is also used to show a little bit of a different texture to the hoodie.

The different clothes of the puppets represent the people from different countries, different backgrounds, different cultures using the same social networks to bully people.

This is how it looks like with all the puppets colored.
Different layers are used for the different parts of the puppets to avoid confusion.

The victim in the sketch is then colored with different shades of grey and white.
Smudge is used to give the murky, swerving feel.

The grey is in a way representing that darkness and depression that cyber bullying victims may feel.

Different layers of words are used to "decorate" the victim.

It is to show that how some words stick with the victim and it stays with them.

I made a copy of the original sketch so that I can see where the shadows can be colored at.
The puppets' shadow has one layer while the hands shadow is another layer.
The opacity of the layers are often to adjusted to ensure that the places colored are right.

With the shadows and puppet done, I went ahead with the background.
I wanted the whole thing to be isolated, like the whole is away from the rest of the world
because cyber bullying is somehow like that.
I chose to paint a brick wall to represent that isolation.

I used different colors of brown and brownish-red.
I changed the opacity and the hardness when I was coloring it.
There are different layers for the wall. Each layer has a different color but
I didn't put them out as different layers.
It is just colored in layers on the same layer.

Finally, a whirlpool is drawn to show the despair and depression that the victim is sinking in.
Black, used with different opacity, is drawn underneath the victim.
I drew a big half oval shape as the top part of the whirlpool.
Then, the size of the half oval decreases as it does down, like an inverted pyramid.
Then, I used smudge to "lengthen the sides"

With final touches of the strings and final layering decisions done,
this is the result.

Bullying happens everywhere. It's in school, at your workplace and sometimes, it also happens at home. It has become a very serious issue because if no action is taken to stop it, it will affect the victim in the long run. Some fall into deep depression, some commit suicide. It affects the victims on so many different levels, even on the ones that we don’t understand. The luckier ones, like Demi Lovato, are able to be homeschooled and make something amazing out of their life.

Now with internet, bullying is now in cyberspace, making even more people, even celebrities, victims. Mean messages, IMs, hurtful words, are all cyber bullying. They say, sticks and stones may break my bones, but words don’t hurt me. This is not true. Words hurt and it cuts deeper than a knife. Cyber bullying is worse because people can do it anonymously and most don't know how severe the effects of this are.

In my design project, I am trying to, in a way, explain how the bullies online use the social networks to “beat” people up and hurl them in a whirlpool of misery.

Art Styles

Pop Art

This is one of my favorite styles of art that I love. I have a love for bright colors and random colored items. It is vibrant and it sort of represents my generation. Colorful, unpredictable and original. Somehow, it reminds me of New York. New York for me is the place I want to end up in. It is a big city with different people living in it and usually it is the place where artistic dreams of the young come true.

The bright colors used gives me an empowering feeling. It shouts "Look at me!" but not in a bad way. It just screams confident. The use of bright colors on random items or objects for example like the different colored lips above, reminds me that there is no limitations. Anything can be colored and used as art, anything can be made into something beautiful and it is in a way, your interpretation of something inside of you.

Action painting
My love for bright colors sort of influenced my decision for favorite art styles, including this one. The unlimited use of color drew me to this style and also it's lack of technique usage.

I am someone who does not follow rules very well especially when it comes to expressive art  and writing. I would feel like I am limited, like I am not being able to be me. I understand that there are some rules to follow but to perfect a technique takes a lot of concentration and sometimes you will realize that the technique you're practicing is not you,

Action painting, like the first picture, can abstract. It can just be a lot of colors. Like an explosion. Or it can be like the Superman picture. He is ready to get into action. Unlike the first one, this picture has structure but yet, it is not as defined.

An explosion of blue and purple

Purple

Purple is bright, it's youthful. Somehow, it's a color that describes me. When my friends see purple shoes, purple bags, they will just tell me that it's so me. My best friend likes purple too. Purple reminds about the happy times that we had even though things are different now. It reminds me of Barney the dinosaur. It reminds me of Justin Bieber. It was his signature color when he was still his down-to-earth, boy-next-door self. Justin Bieber had made it in the world and somehow purple is the also associated with the thought of "
Nothing is impossible."

Purple makes me feel like I can do anything, like I can be anything. I guess it's different for everything but I like the feeling of being infinite.

Blue

There is nothing to be explained when it comes to blue. Blue was my childhood. I have loved blue since I was a little. Ask me what color would I like my bottle to be, blue. What color for my plate? Blue. Anything? Blue. I love blue till now.

I have no reason why but I know how it makes me feel. I feel limitless with blue like how the sea is. No boundaries. No rules. My bag is blue. My stationaries are blue. I am now looking for blue converse shoes. Blue is a color that defines me, like purple. They are MY color.

I am very particular when it comes to which shade of blue that I like. I like the darker blue. Something bold and bright like the eyes of the cat above. Or the blue on the dress. I has to be bold and bright. I don't like matt blue colors. It's too tamed. I want bright blue.
